I remember playing with Eliza software on my TRS-80 model I computer in 1980. The first artificial intelligence \”therapist\”, Eliza would employ the simplest of AI algorithms for the user to have a pseudo-conversation with it. It was amusing, but it became tiresome pretty quickly.
Fast-forward forty-three years and we find ourselves on the precipice where AI is rapidly going to transform the way we do business and live our lives.
ChatGPT is turning search-engine usage on its ear as the AI bot can provide organized content people are looking for without having to slog through pages of search results. It\’s allowed me to create original content for my site, WorldVillage.com, in a matter of minutes.
MidJourney and other AI-image tools are allowing anyone with an imagination the opportunity to create mind-blowing images, photographs and art. For someone like myself, limited to rudimentary sketches, it opens up an entire world of visual possibilities.
AI audio tools like Elevenlabs are able to synthesize vocal patterns so audio content can be created without the person behind the voice actually saying a word.
Film and TV content-creators are discovering methods of turning their work into multi-lingual releases where the actors\’ mouths and lips change to adapt to the foreign language of choice.
Copywriting tools are able to piece together a series of keywords to put together SEO-friendly text that sells. Need a better headline or sales letter? Yeah, you can do that.
In a very short time, the current versions of Siri, Hey Google and Alexa will seem antiquated as voice-operated assistants.
All of this just touches the tip of the iceberg as the onslaught of progress in artificial intelligence is only going to accelerate in the coming weeks, months and years.
Where do these rapid advances in technology leave us a human beings?
Are we going to harness the power of AI tech to bring about a utopian paradise future where our every whim is served by compliant and cooperative artificial intelligence?
Or are we doomed to face the dark, dystopian future foreshadowed in films and tv shows like The Matrix, Terminator and Black Mirror?
I\’d be lying if I said I wasn\’t concerned about our future.
And the problem isn\’t AI.
The problem is people.
The world is filled with people that have good intentions. They want to produce for society, be with their family and friends, and be left alone to enjoy their liberties.
And then there are those who are hungry for power and money. Narcissistic, sociopaths find their way into the highest levels of governments and corporations.
Like all technologies, AI is amoral. It is neither good nor bad.
It\’s what we do with it that is good or evil.
There\’s no stopping the technological developments that are taking place.
What do we do with it?
I a fascinated with the tech and have started a new podcast with Travis Wright to cover how businesses and individuals can leverage the tech for good.
We hope to be a force for good in this space, and invite you along on the journey of exploration.
