\”Cancel culture\” and \”political correctness\” are cancerous. The idea that we should fire people from their jobs and ostracize them from society because they said or did something stupid or offensive (not illegal) is a scourge on society.
The so-called \”woke\” culture isn\’t \”woke\” at all. It is a bunch of whiny, insecure adult children needing safe spaces because of their inability to deal with reality. They are the opposite of woke. They are blue pill eating drones simply following the instruction of the propagandists who provide their marching orders.
The truth is that the world ISN\’T a safe place. It\’s dangerous. People can be absolutely horrible and appalling.
It can also be a beautiful place. And people can be amazing.
But if you can\’t take a joke because you happen to be part of a group, nationality, race or religion targeted by the joke, you need to grow up and become an adult member of society. Want to make a joke against Christians, Jews, left-handers, chubby people, people who wear glasses, middle-age men or heterosexuals? Go for it. I\’m all those things and I can take it. Because I\’m an adult.
I\’ve not been a Dave Chappelle fan. I don\’t think he is hilarious as many do. I never saw him as the comic genius that others ascribe him to be.
But when I saw VICE telling people to skip watching his new Netflix special, I knew I had to watch it.
He is offensive… to everyone. He picks on so-called protected classes the way you would pick clothing off the sales rack at Nordstrom. He says absolutely appalling things that make you go \”whooooaaaaaa!\”. The foul language flows like butter over hot pancakes. It\’s definitely not for everyone. And there are some genuinely funny moments in the mix.
But I applaud him for not getting silenced by the vocal minority of social justice warriors and the overlords in Silicon Valley and in government who tell you what you can and cannot say.
Free speech and the ability to say what you want to say is what sets the United States apart from every other country on earth. Unlike the U.K., you can\’t be arrested for offensive memes (although I\’m sure there are those here who would like for that to be a reality. When we are being nice we call them \”controlling.\” When we are honest we call them \”morons\”.)
I grew up listening to George Carlin, Richard Pryor and the other comedians who were unafraid to attack the ridiculousness of culture head-on.
Today, Jerry Seinfeld won\’t perform on college campuses because of how successful campus leadership has been in inculcating a culture of outrage amongst young people. They\’ve been made hypersensitive to every little offense. No wonder they are all so stressed out.
And being offended is a sign of your own weakness. I\’m not saying I am perfect in this respect, but I am getting better and better. I have come to realize that being offended doesn\’t make me a better person. Nor does it help anyone else. I am empowered to follow who I want and listen to who I want. If I don\’t like what someone says, I just turn away. I don\’t cry like a baby about it.
Watch at your own caution if you are easily offended. But if you can get past the language and understand that the taboos Chappelle tackles are JOKES, then you will indeed be more \”woke.\”
Here\’s how he starts the Sticks & Stones Netflix special…
