Ask Instead of Search: Why AI Is Reshaping How You Find Information

I\’ve been around the internet long enough to remember when \”just Google it\” sounded like magic. Now I\’m watching that magic trick get replaced by something faster—and more useful.

For more than 30 years, I\’ve tracked how technology reshapes the way we work and live. And what I\’m seeing with AI and search is one of the most fundamental shifts in how we interact with information.

The Problem With \”Just Google It\”

Traditional search engines do one thing incredibly well: they give you options. Millions of them.

Type in a question, hit enter, and within a fraction of a second you get results. But here\’s what you actually get:

  • Links, not answers
  • Ad clutter on top of the page
  • Multiple conflicting sources you have to cross-reference
  • Information overload

Especially if you\’re not a digital native—if you didn\’t grow up browsing websites—this experience can be maddening. Too many tabs. Too much noise. Too many decisions about which link to trust.

AI Changes the Conversation (Literally)

AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity flip this entire model upside down.

Instead of showing you links, they give you a conversation. You ask. They answer. Directly.

Example: Travel planning

Google: \”Best trains Rome to Florence\” → 50 travel blogs, booking sites, scattered information

AI: \”Take the Frecciarossa from Roma Termini to Firenze SMN. 1.5 hours, €30–€50 if you book ahead. Here\’s how to buy tickets.\”

Example: Financial questions

Google: \”Roth IRA vs Traditional IRA\” → Dense financial sites, jargon-heavy explanations

AI: A clear, side-by-side comparison written in plain English

Example: Explaining complex ideas

Google: Economic reports and Wikipedia

AI: \”Imagine you get $10 for allowance, and candy costs $1. One day the store raises prices to $2. Your money didn\’t change, but everything costs more. That\’s inflation.\”

This isn\’t just faster. It\’s smarter. AI tailors the answer to you, not to what SEO-optimized websites think you want.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

This shift is fundamentally about accessibility. My own research over three decades shows that millions of people—especially older adults—find the internet intimidating. Too much clutter. Too many ads. Too much choice.

AI removes that friction. You don\’t need to know which websites to trust. You don\’t need to master \”how to Google properly.\” You don\’t need to click through five different sources and piece together the answer yourself.

You just ask.

For non-technical people, this is genuinely liberating. It\’s a different paradigm entirely—one where the machine does the work of understanding, synthesizing, and explaining instead of just pointing you at a list of possibilities.

The Future Isn\’t a Search Bar

We\’re not at the \”end\” of search yet. Google has AI projects like Gemini. Shopping, news, and research still need traditional search.

But the way we think about discovery is evolving. The future isn\’t a search bar. It\’s a chat box.

Imagine this not-so-distant world:

  • You ask your phone: \”Plan a three-day Tokyo trip for October\” and AI doesn\’t just suggest an itinerary—it books your hotels and trains
  • You ask: \”What can I make with chicken, spinach, and pasta?\” and AI orders the missing ingredients from your local grocery store
  • You ask: \”What\’s happening in my town this weekend?\” and it builds a personalized calendar based on what you actually care about

This isn\’t science fiction. We\’re moving from searching to solving. From browsing to conversing. From links to insights.

The Irreverent Truth

Spending hours wasted on endless link-clicking and browser tabs? That\’s not the future anymore.

I just released an episode of my podcast AI for Everyone that dives deep into exactly this: why AI is fundamentally changing how we find information, and how you can start using these tools right now.

Whether you\’re overwhelmed by Google or just curious about what\’s next, it\’s a great place to start understanding the shift that\’s already happening.
