It\’s All About Me

It\’s all about what I\’m having for lunch.

It\’s all about pictures of my cat.

It\’s all about my vacation.

It\’s all about my political opinion.

It\’s all about how I am feeling.

Yes, in social media it\’s all about me.

Naval gazers of the world, welcome your mistress… her name is Social Media.

There\’s no doubt that Facebook, Twitter, Google +, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube have completely changed the way we interact with others.

By providing easy-to-use platforms that encourage us to share what we\’re thinking, what we\’re doing, what we\’re feeling, what we\’re eating, where we\’re going and and who we\’re with, the social sites have created amoral tools that can be used for good or evil.

For some, social media has helped people to make new friends, grow their business, or reconnected them with family members, long-lost friends or old flames. These people would say social media has been a force for good.

Then there are those who recklessly use social media to hawk their wares, spout harsh or hateful opinions and be a general nuisance to the rest of us. You know who you are.

Like anywhere else in the real world, those who accomplish the most in the social sphere are often those who seek to bring value to others. It\’s not rocket science.

But even the most altruistic people in the social media community must still make their presence about themselves to a great degree. After all, how does anyone know what value you may be able to bring if they don\’t know who you are?

That why, ultimately, social media is about me.

Of course, by \”me\” I mean \”you\”.

Your profile will always contain your name, your photo, your bio, your background, your thoughts, your opinions and your feelings.

That\’s why I wasn\’t surprised to see a new service pop up that a number of people are adopting. It\’s essentially an aggregate site that creates a bio page for you which links out to all your main social profiles.

The name?

About.me, of course!

About.me allows you to create your own personal homepage using some pretty nifty tools that any monkey could operate. Seriously, it\’s incredibly easy to do this.

I already have a blog (obviously), so why don\’t I just set up this page on my own site?

I could. In fact, About.me has tools to help you put the page on your blog.

But for me, the bottom line is that the tool is easy-to-use AND I wanted my username.

My About.me page

If you\’ll click the image or link above you will see my page in full-browser glory. It\’s got my bio, photo, links to my social profiles, contact information and links to my latest blog entries.

There is a premium service, but what you see on my page is all free. You can get one of these set up for yourself in a matter of minutes.

I appreciate just how customizable each page is as well. As you browse other people\’s pages, you\’ll see that the background photo, font, content and page layout give each one a distinct flavor. It\’s fun to see what others are doing with the tool.

Check out my About.me page. Be sure to click the Thumbs-up to favorite my page and try sending me a message through the system.

Then be sure to grab your own username and set up a page of your own!

When you do, please post it in the comments field below so others can check it out.

After all, it\’s about about me… er… you.
