I\’ve been a computer gamer since the dawn of the home computer.
I bought a TRS-80 Model I computer in 1980. At 16-years old, I gathered my hard-earned cash (from working at the mall food court) and spent it all on what was the bleeding edge of home computing technology.
This computer had 4K of smokin\’ hot RAM. The storage device was a radio shack cassette tape player.
Oh, yeah. We\’re talking hot stuff.
Anyhow, up until this time my gaming was constrained to video games at the arcade and the earliest console units (Fairchild, Atari…)
Now, I had the ability to sit at a computer and play games. A new world opened up to me!
It\’s thirty-two years later and I am STILL a computer gamer. I guess I always will be.
I am also a collector of old computer games and other old software.
In fact, I\’ve got a room in my basement that has shelves completely lined with hundreds of computer games in their original boxes.
Included in my collection are games dating back to 1981 all the way up to present.
I\’ve also got a number of non-gaming collector\’s pieces such as an original Windows v1.03 complete in the box.
Fun stuff, huh?
I recently read an article in a computer game magazine. The editors had selected their list of the best computer games ever.
I am not your typical gamer. I have very select tastes.
There are some genres of games I just don\’t care for at all.
You won\’t find me playing Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto or Diablo. They just aren\’t my style.
But as I perused my collection, I began drifting into the world\’s that games create.
A great computer gaming experience is in some ways better than watching a great movie.
A great computer game has a way of transcending art and bringing you into a fictional world in a very personal way.
You are the character in the story. The experiences become your own. And very real memories are made.
This led me to ruminate on the games that have most effectively captured my mind and emotions.
Over the years, I\’ve played a number of computer games that have taken hours, days, weeks and months of my attention. In one case, its been years.
Now don\’t get me wrong.
I DO have a life. No, I am not a gaming addict. There are periods of time where I just don\’t have the time or the notion to sit at the computer.
But over the years one of my favorite things to do after having a productive day is to unwind with a good game.
So what are those games that have challenged, entranced and amazed me?
I\’ve made a list of twenty-five titles that are playable on a PC computer. Many of them are older titles that came only on floppy disk. Others will only run on an older version of Windows.
But all of them have found a place in my heart.
Will my list be absolutely comprehensive? No way.
Will I remember a game in the midst of writing about another? Undoubtedly.
I suppose I\’ll leave a place for \”I can\’t believe I didn\’t include this title\” at the end of the series.
I\’m not sure how long it will take me to write about all twenty-five of them, but I hope you enjoy reading about these games as much as I have enjoyed playing them.
Stay tuned for #25, coming soon…
